As a new community space, the Native Sovereignty Center serves as a power-building location and place to come together, offering a full meeting space, a coffee bar, and an open-door policy for people to come by and learn about the Native community in Cincinnati and beyond. The UNC serves the broad interests of Indigenous Peoples throughout Ohio, Kentucky, and Indiana.

The Native Sovereignty Center is our more than our offices, it houses the Indigenous lending library, which provides people a chance to enjoy and check out books and stories that feature Native cultures and authors from around the world.

Urban Native Collective’s Native Sovereignty Center Code of Conduct

Our Commitment

The UNC Native Sovereignty Center is dedicated to fostering a space that upholds respect, good-faith engagement, and meaningful dialogue. This Code of Conduct is to ensure a safe, respectful, and supportive environment for all members and visitors of the Native Sovereignty Center.  We are committed to honoring the values and traditions of the Native community we serve.

To ensure a welcoming and inclusive environment, we ask all attendees to abide by the following guidelines.

Participation Guidelines

Engagement in Good Faith

  • All individuals should engage with one another in a spirit of good faith, fostering a constructive and respectful atmosphere that enhances community collaboration and understanding.

Respectful Dialogue

  • Respect is the foundation of our space. Disagreements may arise, but all conversations must be conducted with civility and intellectual curiosity, avoiding personal attacks, dismissiveness, or hostile behavior.

  • Do not interrupt, talk over, or monopolize discussions. Allow space for all voices.

Cultural and Identity Integrity

  • This space is committed to honoring Native sovereignty, identity, and lived experience. Participants are expected to be mindful of how they represent themselves, especially regarding cultural affiliations, expertise, and authority on Native issues.

  • Misrepresentation of identity, particularly claims to Native ancestry or authority without clear tribal affiliation, will not be tolerated.

No Disruptive or Harmful Behavior

  • Any behavior that makes attendees feel unsafe, unwelcome, or prevents meaningful discussion may result in removal from an event and/or being asked not to return.

  • Disruptive behavior includes, but is not limited to:

    • Discrimination, harassment, and/or bullying of any kind.

    • Aggressive or dismissive language.

    • Repeatedly speaking over others.

    • Making claims that diminish or invalidate Native sovereignty, history, or lived experiences

Enforcement & Consequences

Failure to adhere to this Code of Conduct may result in:

  • A verbal reminder from organizers

  • Being asked to leave an event

  • A request not to attend future events

Decisions regarding removal or exclusion will be made by an Urban Native Collective representative based on the impact of the behavior on the group.

If you experience or witness behavior that violates this Code of Conduct, please speak with an Urban Native Collective representative or contact Briana@urbannativecollective.org.

We reserve the right to modify these guidelines as needed to maintain a welcoming, respectful space for all attendees.

Review and Amendments

This Code of Conduct will be reviewed annually and may be amended as necessary to reflect the evolving needs of our community.
